James Horsburgh (1762-1836) was an
Officer of the British East India Company in the early 19th century,
whose primary interest was in sailing, surveying, navigating and
drawing charts of the East India Islands around Malay, Sumatra,
Java, Borneo, the Philippines and the East coast of China. In 1786
he was shipwrecked off Diego Garcia, an island off Mauritius in the
Indian Ocean. He survived and returned to England and in 1810 he
compiled and published the East India Directory for which he was
justly famous. When he was 42 he studied and wrote about the diurnal
variations of barometric pressure, and was made a Member of the
Royal Society who published his works. In 1830 he helped found the
Royal Geographic Society and subsequently became the Chief
Hydrographer in the East India Office where he continued his work on
the navigation of the East India islands until his death in 1836.
The Horsburgh Lighthouse in the Singapore Strait is a fitting
memorial to his work in East India waters. (Ref. The Oxford
Companion to Ships and the Sea. Edited by Peter Kemp. Oxford
University Press. 1976).

- W. DAMPIER “Carte Ou Est Marquee De Route Que Le Cap. Dampier Tint
Dans Son voyage Depuis Timor Auteur De La Nouv. Bretagne. Etc. ”
Amstd.1698-99. B/W. 16½X15¾. William Dampier (1651-1715) spent a great
part of his life as a buccaneer, making three circumnavigations of the
world before his death in 1715. On his return to London after his first
voyage in 1691 when he was 40, he wrote popular travel books based on
his experiences overseas. In 1697 he published “A New Voyage Around the
World” in which he included maps & sketches from his travels, & many of
his maps showed wind & current vectors & navigational notes which he had
compiled during his voyages with the buccaneers. This chart shows
Dampier's route from Timor at the eastern end of Indonesia, northwest of
the Australian continent, not yet explored, as he sailed northward to
Ceram, rounding the northwestern tip of New Guinea and then following
the coast southward down to the island of New Britain. On his chart
Dampier shows New Britain close to the coast of New Guinea, separated
only by a channel named for him as “Passage de Dampier.” Actually
Dampier's survey was not too far off as New Britain, which is quite a
large island located in the Bismarck Archipelago, is relatively close to
New Guinea's southeastern coast. This rare chart was included in the
French edition of “A New Voyage...” published in Amsterdam by Paul
Marret in 1898. |

signify Position Doubtful.” Another note states “This chart was compiled
from the best existing authorities. Dutch charts & Others. But a
satisfactory examination of the Seas comprised within its limits not
having yet been made, too much dependence must not be placed in it.
There are reasons for supposing that undiscovered dangers exist & that
many of the known reefs are not accurately represented in position or
extent. The Publishers respectively request communication that may tend
to the improvement of this or any of their publications.” Published in
1884 by James Imray & Sons, 89 Minories & Tower Hill, London. 1884.

SE-A151 - JAMES IMRAY
“East India Archipelago. Western Route to China. Chart 4. Sheets 7&8.”
London. 1884. B/W.41X49½. This fine chart in 2 sheets joined, covers an
area from the Natuna Islands over to the northwest coast of Borneo
depicting Bruni Bay & Labouan & Palawan Island off the southwestern
Philippines. Includes 4 large inset charts 1.) Southwest Extremity of
Palawan Island, 2.) Bruni & Labouan, 3.) Balambangan Island, & 4.)
Ambong Bay Etc. Also depicts 4 landfall approach views 1.) Mt. Kini Balu,
2.) Sampadian Island, 3.) Cape Sipang, & 4.) Cape Datou. The chart also
includes a course to Hong Kong during the northeast monsoon, and a small
section of Cochin China in the chart's top left corner. Includes
thousands of depth soundings & dozens of small island groups, and all
primary harbors, inlets & bays. A note on the chart states “Most of the
Reefs so profusely scattered over the surface of the China Sea
undoubtedly exist. Vessels having been wrecked upon them, but their
extent as represented on this chart must be considered uncertain as well
as their position, the Meridian distance of which has not been
determined from any well ascertained point of departure. The delineation
of the Coast of Cochin China & the outlying islets, and also of the
Natuna Islands is incomplete anf far from satisfactory. The Sea
comprised within the limits of this chart not having been surveyed,
shipmasters should navigate it with more than ordinary watchfulness.”
The chart was published by James Imray & Son, one of the most prominent
chartmakers in 19th century London. Their concern for mariners &
navigators using their charts, is apparent in the cautionary notes they
affixed to all their surveys where their information about rocks, reefs,
islands, channels etc, might not have been as accurate as they would
have liked it to be. Imray's also welcomed information from mariners,
returning from voyages, that would provide updates & improvements to be
included in further editions of their famous charts. (Condition. Very
good overall.) This is an Imray blueback chart. |
