NC106 - U. S. COAST SURVEY "Preliminary Sketch of Hatteras Shoals" Wash. D. C. 1850. B/W. 11¼X11. Chart shows Cape Hatteras, Hatteras Cove, Spit, Diamond Shoal, Outer Shoals. Many soundings. Includes sailing directions to clear the shoals. Notes courses and bearings and notes on bottoms and tides.

NC107 - U. S. COAST SURVEY "Sketch D. Showing the Progress of Section IV. 1845-1850". Wash. D.C. 1850. B/W. Small finely engraved & detailed chart with triangulations shows Albemarle Sound, North Pasquotank River. Perquimans River, Elizabeth City, Edenton, Roanoke River, Alligator River, Roanoke Is. Croatan Sound & Currituck Sound. Shows shoreline from Wilet's Hill (Currituck) south to Cape Hatteras naming principal points, houses, islands, inlets, shoals from whence bearings were taken. Locates wreck of the Dolphin.

NC111 - U. S. COAST SURVEY "Wimble Shoals" Wash. D. C. 1870. Col. 7½X8. Small chart shows the shoals with many soundings and sites of two wrecks. 1.) The Dolphin and 2.) The Richmond. Includes indications of bottoms i.e. sand, shell, pebbles, gravel, mud. Indicates shoreline of Chickamicomico.

Large vertical chart shows the Brunswick River flowing into the Cape Fear River. Locates beacons, hospital, Barnard's Creek, Campbell's or Big Is. Orton Pt Lighthouse, ruins of Brunswick, Sugar Loaf. Shows many very detailed soundings in the Cape Fear River with shoals and buoys. Large inset chart top left shows "Cape Fear River in the vicinity of Wilmington." Locates the Brunswick River, Eagles Is, Point Peter. Beacons. Wharves along the Wilmington shore. Dram Tree Pt. and hospital.

Round Hammock & house at entrance. Locates breakers, North and South Bar. Courses. Includes sailing directions into the Inlet and navigational notes on bottoms, tides, courses and bearings and anchorages.

NC130 - U. S. COAST SURVEY “Reconnoissance of Hatteras Inlet. Harbor of Refuge. Coast of North Carolina by the Hydrographic Party under the Command of T. A. Jenkins. Lieut. U.S. Navy & Asst. U.S. Coast Survey. Surveyed in November 1850.” Wash. D.C. 1851. Colored. 14X12. Chart shows the Inlet with the North and South Breakers & many depth soundings in the channels. Locates Round Hammock, a large round tree-covered hill on the northeastern side of the entrance. Depicts areas that are “bare of water at low tide” along the inlet to Bulk Head and ending at Pamlico Sound. Includes sailing directions for pilots, from Cape Hatteras Light House & detailed navigational notes on tides, courses & bearings. An excellent chart in fine condition.

NC131 - U. S. COAST SURVEY “Reconnaissance of New River & Bar. North Carolina. By the Party Under the Command of Lieut. J. N. Maffitt. U.S.N.” Wash. D.C. 1851. B/W. 17X13½. Fine chart shows the New River flowing down to the Inlet & depicts Piney Point, Wilson's Bluff with low water & shoal areas around Stump Sound & the land areas on both sides of the River. Includes detailed navigational notes for mariners sailing around the region and coming into the Inlet from offshore. An excellent chart by the United States Coast Survey.

NC132 - U. S. COAST SURVEY “Sketch of Ocracoke Inlet. North Carolina.” Wash. D.C. 1852. Colored. 13½X14. Finely engraved chart shows the Inlet with the town of Portsmouth & a church steeple near the shoreline. Depicts Pamlico Sound, Beacon Island & the Ocracoke Lighthouse. Locates hundreds of depth soundings within the Inlet & in offshore waters, & includes sailing directions for mariners entering the Inlet from the Atlantic Ocean. This is a fine chart with Hydrography by the Party under the Command of Lt. R. Wainwright. U.S.N. Assistant.

NC133 - J. BIEN “(Untitled.) “General Topographical Sheet III. North Carolina.” New York. 1891. Colored. 16½X27¼. Very striking map of North Carolina & it's coastal regions. Depicts the shoreline from Currituck Inlet down to Albemarle Sound, Pamlico Sound, the Neuse River, Beaufort, Fort Macon & Morehead City. Locates Cape Lookout & the Outer Banks in good detail. Inland depicts primary cities, towns & villages, rivers, roads, railroads & mountain ranges. Published by Julius Bien (1826-1909) a well-known 19th century lithographer, for “The Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union & Confederate Armies 1861-1865.”

Excellent map of the State bordered by Virginia and South Carolina, shows counties in different colors and depicts harbors along the coast from Albemarle Sound and Pamlico Sound down to Cape Hatteras & Ocracoke Inlet, Cape Lookout to Wilmington & Cape Fear. Locates all principal cities, & towns, roads, rivers & railroads. Published by Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893) in his “Atlas of the World” with an inset map titled “Beaufort Harbor,” depicting the harbor entrance with Fort Macon & Shackleford Banks. Good condition.

NC136 - H. S. TANNER “A New Map of Nth Carolina With It's Canals, Roads & Distances from Place to Place along the Stage & Steamboat Routes.” Phila. 1833. Colored. 11X13½. This fine map by Henry Schenk Tanner (1786-1858) shows all principal cities, towns & harbors & includes canals, railroads & roads with distances along the routes. Depicts a “Profile of the Dismal Swamp Canal,” & an inset map of the “Gold Regions” plus an inset map of Craven showing the Neuse River & Newberne. Published in Tanner's “A New Elegant Universal Atlas” later renamed “A New Universal Atlas.” in 1833. Fine condition.

NC138 - U. S. COAST SURVEY “Preliminary Survey of Hatteras Inlet, North Carolina.” Wash. D.C. 1857. Colored. 17½X14. This fine United States Survey chart shows the Inlet to Palmico Sound, depicting Fishing Shoal, areas dry at low water, Oliver's Channel, Bulk Head & hundreds of depth soundings throughout the Inlet. Includes detailed sailing directions for entering the ship channel from offshore & navigational notes on tides & bottoms. Very nice condition.

Attractive map of North Carolina shows counties, cities, towns & villages, roads & rivers & the coast from Currituck, New River Inlet, Cape Fear, Frying Pan shoals, Baldhead & Lockwood's Folly. Published by John Low, New York for John Payne's “New Encyclopedia ” & engraved by Alexander Anderson (1775-1870) with a decorative compass rose in lower right with fleur-de-lys motif & radiating rhumb lines. A finely engraved early map.

NC141 - A. FINLEY “North Carolina.” Phila. 1824. Partial color. 8¼X11. Attractive & well engraved map shows counties, towns, villages, roads, rivers & the coast from Currituck Inlet down to Nags Head & Pamlico Sound, Cape Hatteras, Ocracoke Inlet, New River Inlet to Brunswick, Smithville & Cape Fear, ending at Georgetown & the entrance to Great Pedee River & the border of South Carolina. Anthony Finley (1790-1840) who compiled this map was both an engraver & publisher in Philadelphia in the early to mid 19th century & his “New General Atlas” with 60 plates came out in 1824, engraved by George Delleker & James Young. (Very nice condition.)
