public buildings. Shows street block plans, roads and railroads. Wharves
along the Hudson River; soundings, channels & islands appear in the
river. Lighthouses along the shore; the Knickerbocker Ice Houses are
located and the steamboat landing for the Albany Dayline Steamers. A

in pink. This is an excellent map forr
genealogical research as it notes the names of all major landholders,

“Richmond Hill”.
N.Y. 1867. Colored. 23X13¼. This fascinating map shows Richmond Hill in
Jamaica, Queens when it was the property of A.P.Man. A note under the
title says “it is laid out expressly for
private residences and restricted against all nuisances”.
It is noted as being 138 above high water mark & its distance east from
S.7th Street Ferry 7 miles, and west from Jamaica 1½
miles. All streets are 60ft wide with drives 30-60ft. The map
shows private properties from Crystal Lake, Forest Park, the
Williamsburg & Jamaica Turnpike to Railroad Avenue & Myrtle Avenue
ending at the East New York & Jamaica Horse Railroad & the South Side
Railroad Station & Clarenceville. Richmond Hill is currently bordered by
the Van Wyck Expressway which leads to the JFK Airport & Jamaica Bay.

Colored. 19X29. Attractively colored map shows the Hudson River from
Spuyten Duyvil on its eastern shore & Bergen County, New Jersey with
Fort Lee and Englewood on its western side. Depicts street block plans
for both Yonkers & Englewood on opposite sides of the River, with
detailed names of property owners. Includes the upper reaches of the
City of New York & Woodlawn Cemetery & indicates commercial businesses,
boat and steamboat landings. Also includes an extensive depiction of the
Palisades running the length of the New Jersey shore from Fort Lee to
Huylers or Lower Closter. Original property owners in Englewood, New
Jersey are noted as Lydecker, Vanderbeck, Westervelt, Booth, Van Brunt,
Phelps, Brinckerhoff, names that still exist on Bergen County maps and
were all names of the early settlers along the Hudson River dating from

town, which is heavily commercial and populated. Flushing Creek flows
past the town and Ireland Creek winds its way around the outskirts of
the populated area, to the estate of Mrs.
MacDonald, near Ireland Avenue and Golden Street .This is a wonderfully
detailed map from F. W.

Flushing stretches from Bayside Avenue and a number of large estates to
the commercial center & Parson's & Company's Nursery on Bowne Avenue and
then to Sandford Avenue & the Sandford Hall Private Asylum of MacDonald
& Co. Map depicts all major property owners & commercial businesses &
locates Franklin Place and Jamaica Avenue, Percy Street, Madison Avenue
and the line of the proposed Flushing Village. As the map was published
in 1873, it shows how much of the area was still privately owned in the

Distant.” 3.) “New York & the Entrance of the North & East Rivers.” 4.)
“The Light House on Sandy hook, S.E. One Mile.” 5.) “The Narrows Between
Red and Yellow Hook on Long Island and the East Bluff of Staten Island
Bearing W.b.W.” Original views of the entrance to New York harbor were
published in London in 1777 in The Atlantic Neptune and reproduced in
1968 by the Barre Publishing Co. by photo-offset lithography from the
original plates and hand colored on a rag content paper to replicate the
originals. Size overall is 28X18½. Joseph F. W. Des Barres was an
engineer/surveyor attached to the British forces during the
Revolutionary War. During his time in North America he fought in the
French and Indian wars and from 1764-1773 he & his fellow surveyors,
charted the northeast from Newfoundland down to Delaware Bay. In 1774
Des Barres returned to England and began the monumental task of
compiling his great sea atlas titled the Atlantic Neptune which he
reissued and updated over the next ten years. In the 1960's the Barre
Publishing Co. attempted to reproduce the Neptune in its entirety but
due to financial difficulties it was never totally completed. This fine
sheet of views from the Neptune is one of the remaining copies from the
Barre Co. collection. |

Small, finely detailed chart of Phelp's Ledge off Montauk Point
lighthouse at the eastern end of Long Island, New York. Locates 'strong
tide rip',& Great Eastern Rock with a bell buoy and includes many depth
soundings over and around the Ledge. Depicts Montauk Shoal with a note
“breaks in heavy weather to seaward”. This is a fine navigational chart
of a dangerous area for shipping, off the end of Long Island. |

plans, anchorages and hundreds of depth soundings in sea areas, and

Bay, Rhode Island. The South Shore shows part of Gardner's Bay and
Gardner's Island. Napeague Bay and Montauk Point. Includes Block Island.
Hundreds of depth soundings are indicated in the Sound and offshore, and
the chart includes detailed navigational notes on sailing directions,
tides, beacons, buoys, shoals and other dangers. (Very light staining in

river that flows into it from Lake Champlain at Crown Point down to
Ticonderoga. At the southern end of Lake George is Fort William Henry, &
Fort Edward is located on Hudson's River just below it. Parallel to the
Lake is Wood Creek & running next to the Creek is a footpath with a note
“Very good path East & West.” A small compass rose is depicted in top
left for direction. Published in “The Gentleman's Magazine or Monthly
Intelligencer” in the May 1759 issue, the map was drawn to illustrate
the route for travelers coming down to New York State from Canada and
returning on foot or on horseback. A colorful little map with fine
detail.

Rochelle, Mamaroneck, & White Plains & shows rivers, roads & a section
of the shore along Long Island Sound. On the New Jersey side of the
Hudson the map depicts Fort Lee across the river from Fort Washington,
where an underwater barricade was stretched to try to stop enemy ships
from sailing up the river. The map was published in the French edition
of John Marshall's “Life of Washington” published in 1804. The French
edition titled “Vie de George Washington” was published in 1807 in
Paris. A finely engraved map.

striking map of Long Island covers an area from New York Harbor & Staten
Island with part of New Jersey & the Hudson River, including Brooklyn &

Long Island itself is depicted in it's entirety & runs from New York to
Peconic Bay & Montauk Point, while the Sound is shown with the coast of
Connecticut to Fisher's Island. All harbors, islands, bays & inlets are
drawn along the shorelines, while the interior of Long Island is still
sparsely settled, & the Long Island Railroad only goes as far as
Huntington. A long horizontal map of Manhattan is depicted in lower
right showing a block plan of streets & geological contours. The map was
published in W. W. Mather's “Geology of New York. Part 1” in 1842 while
Mather was serving as Geologist of the First Geological District of New
York under Governor William H. Seward. Also used were the topographical
surveys of J. Calvin Smith. (Condition is very good with original folds

railroads & is one of the first maps to show the Brooklyn Bridge which
was opened on May 24th, 1883, & which spanned the East River from
Manhattan Island to the Borough of Brooklyn. The map shows Kings, Queens
& Suffolk Counties & extends from New York Harbor to Montauk Point.
Below the map is a descriptive text giving the history of Long Island
from the Dutch occupation in 1632 to the date this map was published in

N.Y. 1870. 16X22½. Colored. This fascinating map depicts part of New
York State & Connecticut & features Putnam, Rockland & Westchester
Counties along with New York & the Hudson River & Long Island. The map
shows roads, rivers, canals, railroads, post offices & all primary
cities, towns, & harbors and county seats. In lower right is a “Time
Indicator” in the shape of a clock face with a building in Albany set
into it's center. Under the clock is a caption saying “When noon in
Albany the time is as indicated at the various places.” Along the bottom
of the map are 29 clock faces showing the time at cities & towns in New
York State such as Niagara, Lockport, Buffalo, Rochester, New York,
Elmira & Plattsburg etc. relative to the time at Albany. Prior to 1883,
when the railroads adopted a form of standard time, people relied upon
clocks on public buildings, which were run on a form of local solar
time, which meant that small differences existed between the clock times
in neighboring cities & towns. It wasn't until 1918 that Congress
established standard time zones in the United States. This wonderful map
was published by Asher & Adams in their atlas titled “Asher & Adams New
Topographical Atlas & Gazetteer of New York” in 1870. (Condition good
with slight age-toning down centerfold.) A scarce & attractive map. |

and light vessels with their positions, along with notes on buoys,
beacons & astronomical observations. This excellent chart was published
in D. H. Hurd's “Town & City Atlas of Connecticut” in Boston 1893, &
based on a United States Coast Survey.

Oyster Bay and North Hempstead & Hempstead with many cities, towns,
roads, railroads, steam railways & schoolhouses. Locates Glen Cove &
Hempstead Harbor, Port Washington, Mineola, Westbury, Rockville Center,
Freeport, Farmingdale, Bethpage, Manhasset, East Rockaway, Long Beach &
Jones Beach & shows the County extending from Long Island Sound in the
north and the Atlantic Ocean, along the southern coast. From Everts “New
Century Atlas of Counties of the State of New York”. Very nice

- J. FENIMORE COOPER “Carte Dressee Pour La Lecture des Pionniers.
Romain de J. Fenimore Cooper. Par A. M. Perrot.”
Paris. c. 1827. Colored. 7X5. This finely engraved map was published in
Paris for a French Edition of one of J. Fenimore Cooper's books
titled “The Pioneers or the Sources of the Susquehanna. A Descriptive
Tale,” written in 1823. The map shows Lake Otsego & the town of
Cooperstown located on the southern shore of the Lake & depicts the
source of the Susquehanna River & forested regions around the Lake.
James Fenimore Cooper was born in New Jersey in 1789 & died in
Cooperstown (named for his father) in 1851. The map was engraved by
Pierre Tardieu, one of France's premier engravers, & published under the
direction of Aristide Michel Perrot (1793-1879). This is a fine map for
admirers of Cooper's novels. The most famous of which is perhaps “The
Last of the Mohicans.” which was published in 1826, 3 years after “The
Pioneers.” A decorative title cartouche is drawn in top left &
ornamented with leaves & scrolls.

1944/.46.) Colored. This large handsome chart covers New York Harbor
from it's entrance at Sandy Hook to Manhattan & the Hudson & East Rivers
& the New Jerey shore to Hoboken, Weehawken & West New York. Depicts
block plans of Newark & Elizabeth, (New Jersey,) Brooklyn & Staten
Island. Includes Raritan Bay & hundreds of depth soundings, channels, &
courses, beacons & buoys, compass readings & detailed navigational
notes. This fine chart was taken from the chartroom of the U.S.S
Inaugural, a WWII Minesweeper which, after the War, became a Museum Ship
on the St.Louis, Missouri waterfront, until 1993 when the Mississippi
River flooded it's banks & the ship sank. Excellent condition.

along Lake Ontario & Lake Erie. The map was published in Hardesty's
“Historical, & Geographical Encylopedia ” in 1883. Very nice condition.
