Strikingly handsome map of Mexico decorated with two sailing galleons and a compass rose in the ocean offshore; shows many towns & settlements with red castles designating major cities. Locates Mexico City, Coatalpanecas, Mecho, Techoalium, Lake Chapalicum. Guaxacateca, Tecoalium, Sacatiila. Depicts lakes, rivers, mountains; and harbors around the coast. Title is in a handsome cartouche with lion holding a sword and orb over a crown & shield in center, surrounded by decorative figures, & angels in a scroll and ribbon motif. Index key in lower right is topped with a pair of armadillos and two playful cherubs. French text on verso.

From "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" Striking very early map of Mexico shows Mexico City, Coatalpanecas, Chiapoli, Guaxacate, Lake Chapalicum; coastal ports & many rivers running to the seacoast. Locates mountains and lakes inland. Churches, castles, principal cities and many small market towns & villages. Handsome title cartouche with strapwork motifs appears in top right and a second decorative cartouche is in lower-left showing birds, animals & cherubs in an ornate design, while two ships in full sail decorate the sea, on this beautiful early chart. Text on verso.

M&CA130 - J. N. BELLIN "Carte Du L'Empire Du Mexique Pour L'Histoire Generale des Voyages." Paris. 1754. Colored. 8X11½. Excellent map of early Mexico shows the City of Mexico on the lakes in the center. Locates both the Gulf and Pacific coasts with harbors, capes & bays. Inland depicts lakes & mountains and major towns & settlements; Guadalaxara, Compostelle, Chiamedan, Guaxaco, Zacatula & Vera Cruz. Includes a colorful & ornamental title cartouche with flower & scroll motifs. (Included in De La Harpe's Voyages of 1780.) 

M&CA131 - J. JANSSON “Nova Hispania Et Nova Galicia.” Amstd. 1642. Colored. 13½X19. Very colorful map of Mexico and it's seacoast. Depicts major cities, towns & harbors & locates Mexico City and a large Lake Chapalicum Mare with many rivers flowing into it. Depicts Tecoali, Guaxacateca, Tecaxqui, Sacatula & Coatalpanecas, and shows coastal topography with capes, bays & many rivers flowing to the coast. A galleon in full sail and a sea serpent appear offshore in the ocean which is called Sinus Mexicanus & lettered in fine calligraphy. In top right is a handsome, colorful title cartouche topped with a lion holding a sword and an orb over a crown & shield & bordered by figures & angels in a scroll & ribbon design motif. From “Nievwen Atlas Ofte Werelt 1642” and also in “Atlas Novus” 1647. Dutch text on verso. A very strikingly handsome map in fine color.

Includes block charts of: Nicaragua-Puerto Somoza, El Salvador-Fondeadero La Libertad, Nicaragua-Puerto San Juan Del Sur, Costa Rica-Port Parker, Costa Rica-Bahia Uvita, Costa Rica-Bahia Piedra Blanca, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua- Golfo De Fonseca. 39½”x26” #1960.

M&CA134 - S. HALL “Mexico” Edin. 1840. Colored. 10X14¼. Attractive and colorful map of Mexico shows the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, with Texas located as a Republic. Includes the Pacific coast from Cape Mendocino in California to San Francisco, Monterey, and south to the Santa Barbara Channel and the Channel Islands, and thence south to Cabo San Lucas and the Gulf of California. Map also depicts the Yucatan Peninsula and includes an inset in lower left titled “Guatemala”. This is a finely engraved and detailed map engraved by Sidney Hall for “Black's General Atlas” published in Edinburgh in 1840. Maps showing Texas as a Republic are especially sought after, and this one is in very good condition. 

M&CA135 - BRITISH ADMIRALTY “West Indies. Honduras Gulf with the Zapotillos Cays. Surveyed by Commanders R. Owen and E. Barnett. 1835-41.” London. 1844 (updated to 1966.) B/W. 25½X36. Striking chart of the Gulf and the coastal regions of British Honduras, Guatemala & Honduras bordering it. Thousands of depth soundings in fathoms are depicted overall, along with details of courses, channels and shoals. Includes 5 long landfall approach views to aid mariners entering and sailing through the Gulf, and shows primary harbors around the coast with both topographical and hydrographical details. This fine chart incorporates surveys taken from 1835-1966. Chart #1573. 

M&CA138 - S. A. MITCHELL “Map of Mexico, Central America and the West Indies.” Phila. 1887. Colored. 13½X21½. Finely detailed map includes a great depiction of Mexico and the Baja Peninsula, all of Central America, Panama & the Isthmus of Darien, and the northern tip of South America. Also locates Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, the Bahamas and the West Indies Islands. The map includes 5 detailed inset charts. 1.) Map of the Bermuda Islands, 2.) Map of the Island of Jamaica, 3.) Map of the Panama Railroad and Proposed Canal, 4.) Map of the Proposed Nicaragua Canal route, and 5.) Map of the Proposed Ship Rail Route across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. An excellent map from Mitchell's “New General Atlas” of 1871, republished by William M. Bradley & Bro. 1887. Note: the inset charts on this map that show the proposed Panama Canal and other proposed routes, make this map especially desirable. Good condition.

M&CA145 - (DR.) W. ROBERTSON “Carte Du Mexique ou de la Nouvelle Espagne ou l'on Peut Suivre les Mouvemens des Costes.” Paris. 1778-79. Colored. 11X15. Fine chart shows Mexico and California's Baja Peninsula and the Gulf of California. Depicts cities & towns inland and harbors on both the Pacific and Gulf Coast shores. An inset chart in lower left shows the Lac de Mexico and Mexico City surrounded by smaller lakes and rivers. Includes a colorful compass rose and a very decorative title cartouche ornamented with leaf, scroll and flower motifs. The map was drawn by Thomas Kitchin (1719-1784) and engraved by Robert Benard a well known French 18th century engraver, and published in Dr. William Robertson's “Histoire de L'Amerique” which was published in 4 volumes, each containing one map. Dr. William Robertson was a well respected theologian and Principal of Edinburgh University.

M&CA147 - U. S. HYDROGRAPHIC OFFICE “Central America.Nicaragua Harbor of San Juan Del Norte or Greytown. Original Survey by the U.S.S. Kearsage in 1890 and the U.S.S Montgomery in 1895.” Wash. D.C. 1890 (updates to 1967.) B/W. 18½X26. Excellent chart shows the shoreline of the harbor with very steep cliffs at one end and an old Light Tower near the beach. Depicts Abandoned Dredges, San Juan Del Norte and the Playuella Lagoon. Includes the Steamer Channel and the San Juan River, Harbor Head Lagoon and beaches with constant breakers. Hundreds of depth soundings appear in and around the harbor and all land areas are indicated as covered with trees and low scrub. A very good chart.

Chart includes 2 landfall approach views for entering the harbor. a.) From the Westward. the Lighthouse on Roqueta Is., and b.) From the Southward, the Lighthouse on Roqueta Is. viewed from a different perspective. Chart #872. Used aboard the U. S. Escort Carrier “Mission Bay” in WWII.

M&CA150 - J. MIGEON “Mexique, Amerique Centrale et Antilles.” Paris. 1874. Colored. 13X17. Intensely detailed map shows Mexico and Central America to Panama and the northern tip of South America (Venezuela.) Includes Florida and the Gulf Coast and the West Indies Islands and includes an inset map of the Isthmus of Panama, and a finely engraved vignette of the City of Mexico with large buildings and churches. The map indicates land boundaries throughout and shows major roads leading to primary towns and harbors. Published in “Geographique Universelle: Atlas Migeon,” the map was drawn under the direction of J. Migeon and Charles Lacoste in Paris in 1874.

M&CA152 - W. DAMPIER “A Chart of the Coasts of Peru, Quito, Popayan and the Isthmus of Darien.” London. 1697-1729. B/W. 7X11. This detailed early map shows Panama and the Isthmus of Darien with the coasts of Colombia, Ecuador & Peru, was drawn by Capt. William Dampier (1652-1715) a buccaneer, adventurer and naturalist who made three round the world voyages during his lifetime, and who kept notes on trade winds, storms, tides and weather conditions in the Caribbean, the South Seas and throughout the Oceans of the World. Upon his return to London from his voyages he published books with maps about his experiences, which were enormously popular, and his scientific observations were so acute they were studied and used by Capt. James Cook, Admiral Nelson and Charles Darwin during their own voyages. This chart, showing the harbors along Central and South America's northwestern coastlines was drawn by Dampier on one of his explorations of that region and included in his book “A New Voyage Around the World” published by J & J Knapton in London in 1697 with later editions to 1729.

Two fine maps printed on one sheet show Mexico & the Baja Peninsula down to the Yucatan, & all of Central America down to Panama. Depicts cities, towns & harbors with states, regions & countries in different colors. Includes an inset map of the Isthmus of Panama with coastal & inland topographical details. This is a very handsome two-part chart published by Alvin Jewett Johnson (1827-1884) in “Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World.” in 1869.

M&CA165 - T. JEFFERYS “A Map of the Isthmus of Panama. Drawn from Spanish Surveys.” London. 1762. B/W. 8½X12. Fine copper engraved map shows part of the northern coast of the Isthmus of Panama to Portobelo, a town & harbor under Spanish rule which was continuously plundered by pirates in the 16th, 17th, & 18th centuries. In the late 16th century with Britain at war with Spain, Sir Francis Drake was sent to the West Indies with a fleet of ships to plunder Spanish ports. Arriving at Portobelo, which was a disease ridden area, he contracted yellow fever and died on January 28th, 1596 & was buried at sea. This excellent map shows the Bay of Panama & the area where the Panama Canal was cut through the Isthmus in the early 20th. century. A compass rose with radiating rhumb lines is drawn in the sea area in top center, as an aid for navigators approaching the coast. The map was engraved by Thomas Jefferys one of England's premier engravers & published in “A Description of the Spanish Islands and Settlements on the Coast of the West Indies,” in 1762.

Published by Doubleday, Page & Co. 1914. 386 pages of text, 73 b/w photos & 1 color print titled “Birdseye View of the Panama Canal Zone.” The View, which is a foldout attached to the book as a color insert, is 7X16 inches in size & depicts an aerial view of the Canal from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean and from Colon to Panama showing the locks and the lakes over the course of the entire route. (Good condition.)

M&CA167 - J. N. BELLIN “Carte De L'Empire Du Mexique. Pour L'Histoire Generale Des Voyages.” Paris. 1754. Colored. 8X11½. Finely detailed map shows Mexico City situated on a lake. Locates Quadalaxara on Lac Chapala, Zapotecas, Acapulco & Port De Chequetan, Depicts many cities & towns, mountains, rivers & harbors both on the Pacific Coast & the Gulf of Mexico. This fine map was engraved under the direction of Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), the Director of the Depot de la Marine and Royal Hydrographer to the King in Paris. It was published in Prevot's “'L'Histoire Generale des Voyages” 1747-1761.
