- JOHN MEARES “Tianna.Prince of Atooi, L'Une Des Iles Sandwich.”
Paris. 1794. B/W. 6½X5. This fine engraving of a
Prince of the Hawaiian islands was sketched by a member of Captain John
Meares' crew during his voyage to America's Pacific Northwest, China &
Hawaii in 1786, 1788 & 1789. Captain Meares (1746-1801) formerly a
British Naval officer was sent out from India in 1786 by a group of
merchants intending to enter the fur trade. Meare's ship was named the
“Nootka” Upon reaching the Pacific Northwest coast, Meares ran into two
other British navgators, Captains Dixon & Portlock who warned him off
the coast as he didn't have a South Seas, or an East India Company
license which were required by law for English ships trading in American
& Asian waters. But not to be outdone Meares collected some furs which
he traded in China after wintering in Hawaii. In 1788 Meares took off
again, this time from Macao, for the Pacific Northwest, in the ships
“Iphigenia” & “Felicia” both without licenses & flying the Portugues
flag. Arriving in Nootka he raised the British flag, claimed it for
England & built a warehouse & a schooner which he named the “Northwest
America..” His actions this time provoked the Spanish authorities who
had also laid claim to the territory, so after Meares departure, the
Spanish seized a number of his ships which almost started a war between
England & Spain. War was averted however, after Spain agreed to provide
compensation for the seized ships and the signing of the Nootka
Convention of 1790 which recognized British rights in the region &
disallowed Spanish claims to the northern territories. From “John
Meares.Voyages Made in the Years 1788 & 1789 from China to the Northwest
Coast of America with an Introductory Narrative of a Voyage Performed in
1786 from Bengal in the ship Nootka.” London. 1790. French Edition

- J. COOK/J. WEBBER “View of Karakakooa Bay in Owhyee, Where Capt. Cook
Was Killed.”
London. 1790. B/W. 8½X13. During Capt. James Cook's
3rd Voyage to the Pacific between 1776-1780, he anchored off the coast
of Kauai & Niihau in the Hawaiian islands with his 2 ships the
“Resolution” & the “Discovery” where he found the natives friendly, but
in awe of the great Captain whom they thought was a God while
prostrating themselves on the ground in front of him. Leaving Hawaii,
Cook sailed northward to the Pacific Northwest & Alaska, before
returning to Hawaii in January 1779. Here he anchored in Karakakooa Bay
where the natives, who had been friendly before suddenly turned hostile
& stole one the Ship's Cutters. Shots were fired by Cook's Marines which
killed a native trying to launch a canoe. By now 2000 angry natives had
arrived on the scene. Stones were thrown & spears. Cook was felled by a
club wielded by the mob, who attacked him with spears and daggers
