A fine chart of the Great Lakes surrounded by many Indian lands, lakes, livers & elevations. Ft. Chicagon is located at the southern end of Lake Michigan and Michillimakinac at the northern end of the Lake. Ft. de Niagara is shown at the southwestern end of Lake Ontario. Several islands appear in Lake Supeiior and Ft du Detroit appears at the western end of Lake Erie.

GREAT LAKES

The following are a group of sea-charts issued by the U. S. Corps of Engineers, Lake Survey Office between 1924 and 1928. All are very detailed showing shoreline topography with harbors, many soundings, courses and channels, beacons and buoys, sailing directions, dry docks, marine railways, magnetic variations. The charts were used aboard the old Canadian steamship 'Wallasburg.' They are rolled and in good condition and in full printed color. These Lake charts are scarce and have exceptional detail overall.

The maps show street block plans and the Ohio, Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers. Locates public buildings, railroads, depots, waterworks, canals. The Old Fort Duquesne & Water Street & Duquesne Way in Pittsburgh. Mill Creek flowing into the Ohio River in Cincinnati. Excellent detail of roads and courses of rivers. A fine map.

The Straits of Mackinac, Beaver Island and North Michigan divided into counties & townships showing cities, towns and harbors. Map shows the International Boundary line with Canada across Lake Superior and locates railroads, interurban electric lines and Indian Reservations. Very good detail. From C. S. GL208 - S. A. MITCHELL “Chicago” Phila. 1869. Colored. 14X11. Excellent 19th century map of the City on Lake Michigan, shows detailed street block plans and railroads entering and leaving the city. Includes the North and South Branches of the Chicago River and the Government's Pier with lighthouse at the entrance to the Chicago River from Lake Michigan. The map includes public and commercial buildings and is finely detailed. From Samuel Augustus Mitchell's “New General Atlas.”

GL209 - S. A. MITCHELL “Chicago” Phila. 1870. Colored. 22X14. This is one of the best and most detailed of the late 19th century maps of Chicago as it includes a “Chicago City Street Guide” at the bottom, under the map itself. Chicago's waterfront on Lake Michigan is finely drawn and the map shows street block plans, the Chicago River, Douglas Park and Humboldt Park & the Stock Yards. Railroad tracks are depicted entering and leaving the City. A fine map published in Samuel Augustus Mitchell's “New General Atlas.”

GL211 - P. F. X. de CHARLEVOIX/J. N. BELLIN “Carte Du Detroit Entre Le lac Superieur Et Le lac Huron avec Le Sault Sainte Marie et Le Poste de Michillimakinac. Dressee sur Les Manuscrits du Depot des Cartes et Plans de la Marine.1744.” Paris. 1744. B/W. 8½X6¼. Fine small chart based on the surveys of Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix, (1682-1761) a Jesuit Priest who explored Canada and America's eastern regions between 1705-1720, shows Lake Superior, Sault St. Marie and the St. Mary's River flowing down to Isle Joseph & Northern Michigan with the Straits of Mackinac. Depicts Michillimac Island (now Mackinac Is.) & Bois Blanc Island (White Island), many Missions, & Forts and includes the northern regions of Lake Huron. The map was drawn under the direction of Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) the Royal French Hydrographer and published in Charlevoix's “Histoire et Description Generale de Nouvelle France” in 1744. A fine map.

GL215 - A. ZATTA “Il Paese De Selvaggi Outaucesi E Killistinesi Intorno Al Lago Superiore.” Venice. 1778. Colored. 12X16½. Beautiful late 18th century map by a well-known Italian cartographer and publisher, Antonio Zatta (fl.1750-1804) shows Lake Superior with 5 islands in the center. With the exception of Isle Royale the other islands were fictitious and were the creation of Pierre Francois Charlevoix )1682-1761) a French Jesuit priest who explored Canada and America's northeastern regions between 1705-1720. Charlevoix created the islands to honor his Patron Jean Frederic Phelippeaux, Comte de Maurepas whose family estate was named Ponchartrain and whose Patron Saint was St. Anne. The fictitious islands of Phillipeaux, St. Anne, Maurepas and Ponchartrain appeared on many maps until later explorers were able to discount their existence in the early 19th century. The map of Florida was the creation of Antonio Zatta, and only he knew why he had placed it in the largely unexplored territory above Lake Superior! The map is Plate 1 from “Le Colonie Unite Dell' America Settentrle” a 12 sheet atlas based on John Mitchell's important map of the British and French dominions in North America.” Very good condition.

GL216 - J. H. COLTON “Michigan.” N.Y. 1855. Colored. 15½X12½. Attractive map of the State shows Counties in different colors. Depicts hundreds of cities, towns and harbors and the Capital City of Lansing. Includes roads, canals, villages and Post Offices and the shorelines of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron with all the offshore islands. Locates Detroit and Lake St. Clair and a small region of Lake Erie. This colorful map has a decorative border frame and is from Colton's “Atlas of the World” Plate No.42 Published in 1855.

GL217 - THOMAS,COWPERTHWAIT “A New Map of Michigan with It's Canals, Roads and Distances.” Phila. 1850. Colored. 14½X12. Fine map of Michigan with the Upper Peninsula on Lake Superior, shows Counties in different colors and locates cities, towns and harbors and includes a list of Steamboat Routes e.g. from Detroit to Fort Gratiot and Detroit to Fort Howard. Also depicts canals & railroads, and the land distances from town to town are noted along the roads. Includes a small inset map of the western part of the Upper Peninsula, and shows the Lake Michigan and Lake Huron shorelines. The map is from “A New Universal Atlas Containing Maps of the Various Empires, Kingdoms, States & Republics of the World.” and was printed by S. Augustus Mitchell and published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co.

GL218 - ASHER & ADAMS “Michigian.” NY. 1874. Colored. 23X16. Fine map of Michigan shows all of Lake Michigan and the Eastern Shore of Wisconsin and parts of Lakes Huron and Superior. The map depicts Counties in different colors, and locates all major cities, towns and harbors. Includes an inset map in top right of the North Western portion of the Upper Peninsula. Also depicts the offshore islands and Saginaw Bay. The map was engraved on stone in 1873 and issued in “Asher & Adams New Columbian Railroad Atlas and Pictorial Album of American Industry” in 1874. This is a wonderfully detailed map of Michigan and the Lakes.

GL219 - D. H. BURR “Map of Illinois with Parts of Indiana, Ouisconsin Etc. By David H. Burr. Draughtsman to the House of Representatives.” Wash. D.C. 1836. Colored. 17½X12½. Map depicts Counties & Townships, rivers and major towns throughout the State. Locates Chicago at the southern end of Lake Michigan and part of Wisconsin spelled Ouisconsin on Illinois's northwest border. Also includes parts of Missouri and Indiana. From U.S. Senate Document No. 259. Rep. 12. David Burr (1803-1875) was Topographer to the United States Post Office & Geographer to the House of Representatives of the United States. He was also a well-known New York publisher. This is a finely engraved early 19th century survey.

GL220 - O. W. GRAY “Gray's Atlas Map of Lake Superior and the Northern Part of Michigan” Phila. 1874. Colored. 12X15½. This excellent map of Lake Superior & the Northern regions of Michigan, shows the Apostle Islands & Isle Royale in the Lake, with Fond Du Lac & Keweenaw Bay & all harbors around the shoreline. Includes a section of Minnesota's Lake shore in the west & the Canadian border in the northeast plus the northern region of Lake Michigan with it's islands & the entrance to Green Bay, Wisconsin on one side & the Straits of Mackinaw leading to Lake Huron on the other. The map was first issued in 1855 by J. H. Colton, a well-known New York publisher & later reproduced by O. W. Gray & Co. in Gray's “Atlas of the United States with General Maps of the World” in 1874. (Note: on the back is a handsome map of Michigan, also by J. H. Colton and also included in Gray's Atlas of 1874.

GL221 - L. Q. HARDESTY “Catawba Island & Ottawa City.” Chicago. 1874. Colored. 13X14½. Fine map shows Catawba Island in Lake Erie with names of property owners & the Sandusky Cement Co. Includes a street block plan of Ottawa City with it's store, schools, Post Office & commercial buildings. The map has a decorative border frame & was published in Hardesty's “Illustrated Atlas of Ottawa County, Ohio.” in 1874.

GL222 - J. N. BELLIN “Carte Des Lacs Du Canada Pour Servir a L'Histoire des Etablissamens et du Commerce des Europeens.” Amstd. c.1773. Colored. 7½X11. Very attractive map of the Great Lakes was drawn under the direction of Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) the Royal Hydrographer to the King & Director of the Dept. de La Marine in Paris. Bellin's first map of the Lakes was drawn in 1744 from sketches by P. F. X. De Charlevoix (1682-1761), a French Jesuit Missionary who traveled on foot & canoe extensively throughout the area. Since then a number of updated editions were published but the three apocryphal islands in Lake Superior - Isle St. Anne, Isle Ponchartrain & Isle Maurepas drawn in the Lake by de Charlevoix had not yet been eliminated from the map, which includes the River & Settlement at Chicagou on Lake Michigan's southwest shore, & Le Detroit on the Detroit River where it flows into Lake Erie, plus forts, settlements, harbors, & rivers around the Lakes. A handsome title cartouche is placed in lower left and decorated with leaves & scrolls in the French rococo manner. The map was published in Amsterdam by E. Van Harrevelt & D. J. Changuion in 1773. (Ref. Kershaw. “Early Printed Maps of Canada ”. Vol. 111, 956, & 957. & Schwartz & Ehrenberg “The Mapping of America ” Page 162). Condition. Very good with centerfold & wide margins.
