“A Plan of the Intended New Road from Padington to Islington.” London.

to Oxford Street including Grosvenor, Berkeley, Hanover and Cavendish
Squares. Marylebone, the Middlesex Hospital, Great Russell Street & Red
Lion Square, Holborn & Lincoln's Inn, before ending at Islington. This
was an area in central London that was occupied by grand mansions, inns,
coffeehouses, markets, fashionable shops & hospitals, and where a new
road was planned to by-pass the area and ease the congestion of London's
narrow streets. The population of London in the 1750's was estimated at
around 650,000, over 10% of the population of England. (See

- R. DAWSON “The
Metropolitan Boroughs As Defined by the Reform Bill”.
London. 1832. Colored. 24X19½. Very handsome map decorated by shields,
flowers & leaves in the top right and left corners, shows the original
boundaries of the Boroughs of Marylebone, Finsbury & Tower Hamlets & the
Present Boundaries, as well as streets and parks in the center of
London. The map covers an area from Hampstead and Highgate in Northwest
London, down to Lambeth & Streatham, Norwood & Deptford south of the
Thames. Includes also Whitechapel & Mile End in the Tower Hamlets &
Tottenham Parish. The River Thames is depicted flowing through the
center of London from Greenwich to Battersea, Wandsworth and Fulham.
This fine map was drawn to show the extent of the new reform of the
Parliamentary franchise passed by the 1st Reform Bill in 1832, which in
addition to sweeping redistribution of seats, granted the franchise to
borough householders paying a 10 pound rental and in counties the
franchise to those with a rental of 50 pounds. Several more Reform Bills
were passed in later years changing Parliaments rights in favor of the
people in general. From “County Maps and City
Plans of England and Wales” published by
Hansard in 1832. A very fine map. .
