Paris. 1854. Partial color. 12X17. Finely
engraved map shows all of Asia & Asia Minor, the Near, Middle & Far
East. India, Russia, China & Japan & Southeast Asia. Map is surrounded
by fanciful engraved scenes of native peoples, animals & vegetation &
includes a population table for the primary countries & regions depicted
on the map. The handsome illustrations were drawn by the prominent
French artist, Raimond Bonheur. |

Asia Minor depicts a large area of Turkey down to Syria & Mesopotamia
(Iraq,) including the islands of Crete and Cyprus in the Mediterranean.
Locates many regions & states in Turkey, Armenia, Pontus, Phrygia, Lycia,
Mysia, Propontis, Galatia, Paphlagonia, Bythynia & others; and kingdoms
in Syria and Iraq. Includes a fine depiction of the Black Sea named
“Pontus Euxinus” with its extensive shoreline. A very handsome map,
finely engraved by Jean Baptiste D'Anville. |

Générale des Voyages. Tirée des Cartes Levees par les P.
P. Jesuits.”
Paris. 1749. Colored. 8¼X12. Very decorative chart shows Manchuria in
northern China & Russian Siberia & Sakhalin Island off the coast. The
island is now a centre for herring fisheries & its commerce is coal, naptha,
oil, timber & alluvial gold. The chart shows many mountains,
rivers, lakes & settlements inland, & includes a very decorative
ornamental title cartouche with leaf, flower & scroll motifs.
The chart
was taken from surveys by Jesuit Missionaries & was included in De La
Harpe's Voyages. 1780. |

Générale des Voyages. Tirée des Auteurs Anglois.” Paris. 1749. Colored.
9X12. Finely engraved chart shows China's capital city of Peking inland
from the Gulf of Lyau-tong. Chart locates northeastern China to the
border of Russia & includes part of Mongolia & the Gobi Desert. Depicts
many mountain ranges, rivers, & lakes & includes a mileage scale
surrounded by an ornamental cartouche with leaf & scroll motifs. Chart
was based on information taken from English maps and was included in De
La Harpe's Voyages. 1780. A fine chart. |

son tres humble, tres obeissant, et tres fidele, serviteur Hubert
Jaillot.” Paris 1695-98. Colored. 22X34.
Stunning map of Asia from eastern Europe & the Mediterranean Sea to
Africa & the Red Sea, Arabia & the Persian Gulf and thence to India,
Burma and Southeast Asia, including China & the islands of Japan. The
islands in the Indian Ocean and around Malaysia and Indonesia & New
Guinea are clearly depicted including the Philippines. The map has an
extraordinary amount of detailed place names overall for such an early
date. The title in top left is in an elaborate cartouche topped with
shield & crown and surrounded by figures, scrolls, leaves & flowers. A
second cartouche in top right surrounds the mileage scale with leaves &
scrolls and topped with finely engraved drawings of camels & drivers.

“Asie”. Paris. 1812. Colored. 8½X12. Finely engraved
map of Asia shows all of the Asian countries stretching eastward from
Europe and the Mediterranean Sea across to the Middle East, Russia,
India, Burma, Siam, Malaysia, the Philippines and Marianas, to the coast
of China and the islands of Japan. Depicts the Kuriles Isles and Russian
Kamptchatka and the coast to the Bering Strait and America's Pacific
Northwest coast of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Title in lower right
is in a circle surrounded by leaf branches, spears, fruit, banners and
weapons. Published by Conrad Malte Brun (1775-1826) in “Atlas Complet Du
Precis de la Geographie Universelle” and prepared by Pierre Lapie
(1777-1850) a well-known surveyor and cartographer in early 19th century
Paris.

London. c. 1850. Colored. 10X13. Very decorative map of Asia with
colorful figures in native dress, a coastal sailing vessel, a scene on
the island of Rhodes and a view of Mount Olympus, the tallest mountain
in Greece. The map shows Turkey & Constantinople, the Black Sea & the
Sea of Marmara, Smynra & the Aegean Coast with the islands of Rhodes &
Scarpanto. Includes Cyprus & the eastern end of the Mediterranean with
the Gulf of Adalia & Aleppo in northern Syria. This is a fine map with a
Grecian Fret border. From “The Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of
the World, Geographical, Political, Commercial & Statistical,” by John
Tallis in 1850.
